The flag of Venice, also known as the "Lion of Saint Mark", is a red, white, and gold horizontal tricolour with a stylized winged lion holding an open book in its front paws, over a red background in the centre. The red and white stripes represent the two main islands of Venice, namely Murano and Burano, while the gold symbolizes prosperity and wealth. The lion holding the book represents Saint Mark the Evangelist, who is the patron saint of Venice. The flag was first adopted in the 11th century as a naval flag and has since been used as the official flag of the Republic of Venice. Today, it is still used as a symbol of Venetian culture and identity, and can be seen flying throughout the city during festivals and celebrations.
